In Germany the term of necrology, which is "Nekrolog" in German is a very old-fashioned word. We even had to explain this on the German website. However, this is the Obituary on Johann Sebastian Bach which is uncommonly long compared to obituaries of less well-known folks in Germany. What is exciting regarding the Necrology of Johann Sebastian Bach is the fact that it was written shortly after Bach's death in 1750. However, the broad public didn't read about this obituary until after four years. The audio sample is on this page at the bottom.
By no means, because you want to know exactly everything about the Thomas Cantor and the Royal Polish and Electoral Saxon Court Composer. This is best done with an up-to-date biography, because it eliminates most historical errors. Or you can choose at least one work by Spitta or Forkel, Schweitzer or Terry. The optimum is available from the leading scientist on Bach: with the current work on Bach by Christoph Wolff. Or with the provocative and excellent biography by Klaus Eidam: "The True Life of Johann Sebastian Bach". The latter is my husband's favorite biography; he has already read it four times.
The Necrology for listening to "Bach 4 You" is then great if you want to enjoy "Bach at Bach's time", that is in a German of 1750: If you enjoy the language and the German grammar (... and the transferred counterpart in English) of that time for an hour. Or, if you want to consciously experience the difference, which even in terms of content – mostly insignificant – reflects the state of knowledge of that time compared to today: Bach, for example, walked to Lüneburg, Germany. However, he did not do this because his brother had died, but because Johann Christoph's family was expecting further offspring and Johann Sebastian's grant in Ohrdruf was also coming to an end. Really not important, if you want to experience Bach, in a language as it was common at that time.
And here it is, as promised: the audio sample. The Bach Necrology, interspersed with numerous well-known and popular musical works by Johann Sebastian Bach. The narrator is a well-known professional speaker, and we hope you enjoy listening to the sample. Here is your way to the shop.
